Rick Johnson

Drawn by the beauty of the Cascade Mountains and a love for hiking and mountain climbing, Rick Johnson left his career as a professional musical theater singer, actor, and dancer to be a vocal music and songwriting teacher in Central Oregon.  After 30 years of teaching, he retired to focus on family and performing/songwriting full-time.

Raised in Houston Texas, Rick received his Bachelor of Music degree in Musical Theater and his Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Oklahoma City University.  He is honored to have studied private voice with classmates (and now Broadway stars) Kristin Chenoweth and Kelli O’Hara in the vocal studio of Florence Birdwell.  He received his Oregon Music Teaching Certification from Oregon State University.

Rick Johnson has performed, and is still performing, as a professional singer, actor, dancer, and director in respected theaters around the country.  Some of Rick’s favorite roles include Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Galveston Musicals), Robin in Robin Hood: The Musical (New York City Off-Broadway premier and 1st national tour), the Emcee in Cabaret (Cat Call Productions), the Leading Player in Pippin (Magic Circle Theater), and Bobby Strong in Urinetown (Cascades Theatrical Company).

In his spare time, Rick enjoys the nature.   He often can be found hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, mountain climbing, camping, fly-fishing, and photographing animals.

Rick is a strong advocate for wild Rocky Mountain, Alaskan, and Oregon wolves.  He loves to visit Yellowstone and Denali National Parks to watch, photograph, and learn about the wolves.  He is thrilled that wolves are migrating back into Oregon and looks forward to hearing their howling voices in the Cascade Mountains.

For 14 crazy years Rick spent his nights and weekends as a dog sled musher.  At one point, he had 12 beautiful Alaskan Huskies living with him in his home.   During the cold months, he attended (and won) many races throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Rick is very lucky to have found his beautiful wife, who shares his extremely busy lifestyle of making music, acting, and enjoying nature.  Rick and his wife have an amazing son who is starting to show his own affinity toward music and nature.

Rick would like to thank his family, friends, dogs, and all of his fans for their support.
